A.T.S Records {R.A.]clerk-London-44-46 in 1944 written by lucy Newbery nee Griffiths
I worked in Ibex House in the Minories, mainly in Central Registry. My first address was Queensgate Gardens SW7 and then the unit[H Coy No 1 London District Group]moved to Moncorvo House in Ennismore Gardens SW7.My friends and I used to go to the Stage Door Canteen in Piccadilly, the Nuffield Centre and were members of the Queensberry Club.It was a really good experience and I thoroughly enjoyed most of my time in the services.I was posted to Edinburgh on 15/9/46 along with Penny, a Warrington girl, we had to stay at a camp near Newcastle for one night.Life in camp at Craigiehall was a complete change for us,working, eating and socialising with the same people all the time We were glad of the occasional liberty truck. We were at H.Q.and our dances were attende d by the camps around and we went to theirs. The naval base at Port Edgar had film shows and table tennis so all in all life was different but not so good as London. The people at Sth Queensferry and Edinburgh were most kind to us. |
